Push-Pole is a kinetic sculpture that focuses on the interplay of interactive forces involved in the transduction of energy into movement, movement into sound. Powerful magnets are affixed to coupled pendulums that hover about sixteen vertical pendulums that push and pull the pendulums from their natural resting positions. Each pendulum's motion is translated into sound by sensors that pick up the magnetic field from the complementary structures on the ground. As energy is kicked into the system, this kinetic sculpture translates these tensions into sound and motion by sonifying how the system eventually settles into a steady state. In this way, this sculpture reflects the dynamics of systems of "coupled oscillators" which account for a wide range of natural and biological phenomena.
